What a Day! What a Visit!
There’s nothing else to say about our most recent visits to The Children’s Hospital at Tri-Star Centennial and Alive Hospice on November 12th than “What a Day! What a visit!”
We started our day at Tri-Star Centennial Children’s Hospital by welcoming back one of our favorite CLS, Sydnie (Epstein) Just, returning from her nuptials back in late October. She was happy and smiling to say the least. Of course, we had to have our customary “elevator” picture to commemorate the occasion. Today we also welcomed a new Music Medic into the family, tenor Charlie Bretz. He’ll fit right in with his quartet background!

That's Sydnie hunkered down in the back. The new guy has no uniform of the day, yet.
Onto the rooms and our first visits in Oncology where we sang for a sweet little lady who wanted to come out into the hallway and sing with us. OFF LIMITS! Since she couldn’t do that this young lady asked us to leave; she was finished with us. We sang to several more in Oncology and then over to the Children’s Ward where we met a sweet young girl and her parents who at first were hesitant to have us sing; However, when they saw her smile during the “Name Song,” and then an even bigger smile during “You’ve Got a Friend,” the look on their faces was one of astonishment and said it all. They had no idea about the power of music and how even the most ill can find relief.
We ended our day in Pediatric Emergency where one little man, refused to smile as he lay on the bed with that “look” on his face, one of stoic determination, letting us know, “no matter how much I like this, I’m not going to crack a smile.”
*And another 9-month old sweetie on her momma’s lap on the bed, full of smiles and giggles.
*And yet another teenage patient with her Dad, quite receptive to our Name Song and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. We also spied our old friend, Dr. Jaeger, at the door, singing along; coincidentally we found he was the attending ED physician today.
We left feeling great about our visits and traveled to ALIVE Hospice for our final stops of the day.
After a short warm-up in the Chapel, when we began our “rounds” we were immediately greeted by another ol’ pal, Social Worker, Henry, who has been with us since we began this outreach in 2022. We visited with four patients and families including a grandma patient with her doting and caring granddaughter at bedside, both singing along with familiar worshipful songs, and even serenaded again with “The Name Song” before we moved on; we found that a bit of a swap since we customarily will present our up-beat tunes first!

Without a doubt this was ONE of the most fulfilling days the Medics have experienced in quite some time .
We ended our day in our now customary prayer circle, giving thanks to God for the gift of music, the gift of each other as Nashville Music Medics and the gift of being able to serve His children in such a meaningful way.
