This Time Nashville Music Medics Get The Patient Serenade! What a day the Nashville Music Medics had during our visits to Tri-Star Centennial Children’s Hospital and ALIVE Hospice on October 8th. It was almost business as usual at Centennial Children’s. Before beginning our “rounds” we took time out to celebrate the forthcoming October 24th nuptials of our CLS, Sydnie Epstein. She was indeed surprised by our card and gift. Then it was on to our patient visits where things got a little crazy. One little guy who initially wanted us to sing to him, began crying on that first chord! He urged us to leave. We got the message! Oh well! You can’t please everyone every time ! Our final stop found a young man smiling throughout the entire time but when we asked him how he liked our singing, he shook his head “NO”. However, he was still smiling as we departed! (just a bit confusing to most of these old guys in scrubs).
Collaborator feedback: Smiling patient? Don't ask
This photo of the many riding toys reminded us of the joy we often experience when the hall is occupied by little ones on the mend, seated on those toys! We then traveled toALIVE Hospice where we had marvelous visits with patients and families. When we were escorted to one of the patient rooms where we were expected we found the patient fast asleep and we were joined by his wife in the hallway. We visited and explained our mission complete with the singing of our “Name Song” leading to yet another tune in the hallway! We concluded our visits with gathering around “Joyce” and her family. And here’s the connection to our title“The patient serenade..” We quickly learned Joyce had a professional career singing light opera as she joined right in on the familiar songs serenading us with her beautiful soprano voice, especially on our version of “It is Well”! What an unexpected pleasure it was to be sung to by such a wonderful patient. You just can’t beat the blessing we receive each and every time we go to sing.
