“Not Good Enough” Quartet meets Wolfgang and makes another new friend
Nashville Music Medics sent one of our quartets, “Not Good Enough”, to appear on the RyanSeacrest Studio Stage in early May 2025, for our monthly singing for patients and families at Monroe Carell, Jr., Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. “Not Good Enough” quartet is made up of experienced quartet singers but not necessarily the same singers each time. Sam, Paul, Doug and Alden were “Not Good Enough” this time AND we were in for a treat!
We had just concluded the program from our stage position when we noticed a young lad had just come into the seating area with his mom. Our “not-ever-so-reluctant-to-take-initiative” baritone, Sam, jumped from the stage and went to speak with them! (Well, he did NOT jump from the stage; he actually stepped to the floor and moved cautiously to speak with Mom. He’s old!) We wanted to sing our special NAME SONG but, of course, we needed the lad’s name.
Wolfgang! Wolfgang was his name! This was another first! None of the four of us could recall ever meeting a “Wolfgang” during all the years we have sung together. We invited Wolfgang to move closer to the stage for his special song, as Mom encouraged him to do so and took her place with her phonecam at the ready!
We learned weeks later, in July, that Wolfgang used the nickname “Wolfie”; we also learned the rest of the story that had brought Wolfie to Monroe Carell. I am so very glad that I gave Mom a Nashville Music Medics business card with my personal email and asked that she please send us her video.
THE REST OF THE STORY
It is rare that we receive follow-up status reports from patient families or even know any circumstances. In July, just a few days ago, I received a nice email from Wolfie’s Mom attaching her video from the “Wolfgang Song” weeks ago. It was precious!! I’m certain you will agree.
Wolfie’s Mom, Taylor, wrote: “ I completely forgot to send this but the memory came up on my phone. This song made Wolfies day. He was having a hard time getting through his first MRI and it was very scary to him. You guys brightened his day!! Thank you!”
I subsequently learned from Taylor that Wolfie had come to Monroe Carell for some seizures evaluation. Wolfgang started having seizures and they were there to check for any brain abnormalities. “Thankfully God has restored him completely”, she added.
She offered that he started having seizures at 3 years old and had them for 3 years, perhaps once a month. Their doctors did not understand why the seizures started. After the Monroe Carell visit they put him on a medication “and he’s been seizure free ever since. We are so thankful! He will go off the medication next May and see if his brain has healed so that he doesn’t have to be dependent on it anymore.” By Sam English for Nashville Music Medics “Changing the World One Smile at a Time”
