Another First for Nashville Music Medics ! During our June 6 visit to Monroe Carell, Jr., Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, we were invited to sing at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center for what we hoped would be another long-standing partnership with Vanderbilt Hospital.
We were certainly surprised at the reception we were given. The Medics also made some new friends at the Center, including Reece, a Magnet School Principal. What a treat it was for us to be able to sing for her. And there often seems to be a little backstory. As we were singing our signature song many of us noticed Reece was smiling and swaying, enjoying the moment. When we finished “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, an outspoken baritone, who has control of the pitchpipe, stepped out and began walking in Reece’s direction. He walked back to us with Reece by his side and introduced us to her. “Hey, Guys, this is Reece. I’ll bet we have a special song she might enjoy.” Without hesitation we heard the Bb pitch and began, “The Reece Song”. We always have fun with this name song and as the photos depict we are pretty sure Reece did also.
She commented, “I really would like to have you come and sing for my children.” We’ll see what happens. According to Julie Bulger, Sr. Program Manager, CCLS, for Patient and Family Care and new friend, everyone loved it, and she knew that our singing would lighten the hearts of the folks that were in the Center that day.
