Our Hearts Were Touched!
If you want to know if a child has been raised correctly by its parents, just make a hospital visit.
We’ll begin at the end, with the final hospital patient we visited, where this “touching of hearts” really climaxed.
During our May 14th visit to The Children’s Hospital at
TriStar Centennial, we stopped in to see a wonderful young man in the
Oncology Unit.
He was so excited to have us come in to sing to him, and because he
heard us singing nearby, his first request was for us to sing our “Name Song” to his Mother.
He wanted to make sure that his Mother felt better about his being there, rather than making himself feel better with all he was going through.
The Medics were all quite moved by his gesture of kindness towards his
Mother. We of course honored his request and when we were finished, his
Mother exclaimed, “He is always generous and kind.” We could clearly
attribute that to her and the way she raised him.
( and, FURTHER, as we were leaving the room, our longtime baritone and keeper of the pitchpipe, Sam, stopped at bedside to greet Mom. He learned this young man has been in this Oncology Unit for three weeks!! Sam compassionately told Mom, “We’ll be back in two weeks and we do not want to see either of you here again!” Sam and Mom both laughed together and Mom responded, “Neither do we. We are scheduled for discharge soon now!”)
Our visit was full of so many highlights.
There were two young ladies that blessed us all. One also wanted us to sing to her mother and another squealed with delight and smiled beautifully as we sang for her
Our very first visit this day was with a lovely little girl who knew every
word to “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and excitedly sang along with us. (Thank you,
Randy Newman, the writer)
We’re just so blessed to be able to provide this wonderful service to these
children and their families. Our lives are certainly better for it.
It’s Great to be a Nashville Music Medic
A collaboration by Sam and Wayne for Nashville Music Medics (2025)
AND THEN FOUR OF US CLIMB INTO THE WEZULBUS AND MEET OUR BROTHER MEDICS AT ALIVE HOSPICE, NASHVILLE, TO CONTINUE OUR OUTREACH.
We always understand how uniquely different these two wonderful outreaches can be. We customarily will do a few warm-up songs before heading for the corridors for visits with patients and families. The nature of our tunes will be understandably different from those we sing for our “kiddos” and we never know what to expect when we arrive at Hospice. ESPECIALLY, this time, when the Hospice Volunteer leading us, Mary, asks for a special song during our brief warm-up. Mary has spoken fondly about Nashville Music Medics to her dear friend Carla; she now asks for our “Name Song” be sung for Carla. However, Carla is not here!! The wonder of cellphone video is about to happen and be placed in front of Carla when she visits in a few weeks! Oh, and this same sweet grandma volunteer also did this for her grandson a few weeks ago and made gobs of “Nana” points. Let’s just hope the correct video gets played for Carla!!
And indeed, we had another warm and blessed day visiting Hospice patients and families.
